WHAT better time of year to support Slipper Day on August 5 by wearing your slippers to work or school, while supporting children fighting life-threatening illnesses.

The annual campaign, launched in 2011, encourages people to purchase a R10 sticker and wear their slippers to work or school on the first Friday of August, to show their support for children who are seriously ill.

So far, the campaign has managed to raise more than R6.5-million for the Reach For A Dream Foundation.

Reach For A Dream Foundation fundraiser Liezel Mavata said R3 497 586 was raised last year around the country.

All funds raised by the foundation are used to help fulfill the dreams of children facing lifethreatening illnesses.

About every 500 stickers sold for Slipper Day will cover the costs of one dream for a child, fundraiser for the Reach For A Dream Foundation, Liezel Mavata said.

“The children’s dreams vary. No dream is bigger or smaller than another.

“One child may want a laptop, another a trip to Disney Land, another to be flown around the country and we have to fulfill all those dreams.”

“We have handover dreams, when we buy something and give it to a child.

“We have experience dreams, where we maybe take a child to Inkwenkwezi [Game Reserve], where they can feel and touch the animals.

“Or we also have travel dreams, when we take them to a certain destination of their choice,” Mavata said.

Individuals can purchase their stickers at any Pick n Pay or Wimpy, and corporates and schools can order their stickers in bulk by e-mailing slipperdayelo@reachforadream.org.za or calling (043) 726-0330.
