DOCTORS Without Borders or Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) have arrived in East London and hope to sign up regular donors to fund their emergency medical work.

For two weeks, the MSF fundraising team have ventured into the Eastern Cape.

They paid a visit to Greenacres Shopping Centre in Port Elizabeth, where they were greeted with overwhelming support.

“We managed to sign up 130 new donors in just five days – making an average of 26 donors per day. We really would like to thank Port Elizabeth residents for their continued support and dedication to our cause,” MSF Southern Africa communications officer Angela Makamure said.

Here in East London, the MSF team will be at Vincent Park Shopping Centre until Sunday.

They will be interacting with shoppers and raising awareness on the work MSF does worldwide.

MSF is an independent, international medical humanitarian organisation that works to bring emergency medical care to people in conflict areas around the world. It also provides assistance in times of crisis and natural disasters.

Present in more than 65 countries, MSF relies on the regular generous donations from individual donors to support its work.

“Our donors are the life-blood of our work and without them we can’t do much. As we come to East London, we would like to ask the community to come and support us,” MSF fundraising travel teams co-ordinator Kelly Barlow said.

Last year, a total of 80 100 malnourished children were treated, 132400 patients living with HIV received antiretroviral (ARV) treatment and 92600 major surgical interventions were performed.

In South Africa, MSF also runs two HIV and TB projects in Eshowe (KwaZulu-Natal) and Khayelitsha (Western Cape) as well as a project offering comprehensive care and treatment to survivors of sexual violence in Rustenburg (North West).

“The funds we receive are very very important for our work,” Makamure said.

“The funds go directly to our operations in the field, providing health care to all those in need of it.”

To support MSF’s vital work you can visit Vincent Park Centre this weekend and find out more from the fundraising team.
