WONGALETHU High School in Mdantsane received 20 computers for pupils and 21 laptops for the teachers, courtesy of Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula and the Eastern Cape provincial government.

These donations follow numerous visits by Mapisa-Nqakula to the school and concern at the school’s dismal matric pass rate. With the generous donation of computers, the minister aims to improve the pass rate of 17% which the school obtained in 2014.

Mapisa-Nqakula pleaded with the school to guard the equipment and asked the school’s governing body to take responsibility.

“Please be the eyes and ears of this school and its children and in doing so make sure that these children know what is in here belongs to them,” she said.

School principal Ntombizonke Mamatu could not control her excitement when the minister and her entourage arrived after Eastern Cape premier Phumulo Masualle.

When the GO! & Express spoke to her, she said. “As the school, we are extremely happy.

“This donation is a key to unlock information to our children. These computers and the innovation that come with them, will make information and knowledge very easy for our children to obtain. We are very hopeful that they will use these computers for educational purposes,” said Mamatu.

“To the minister, we would like to thank you for not leaving us behind and that your eyes saw Wongalethu High School among the other schools. We promise to make you proud and help our school and pupils become the best they can become in society.”

Grade 12 pupil Azile Skhonkwane said the computers will make a huge impact on their school work and definitely yield good matric results.

“I say with great pride as a pupil of Wongalethu High School that this donation by the minister will assist us very much.

“We used to struggle a lot because there are only two libraries in Mdantsane that we could seek information from. Now that we have our own computers and internet access, we will be able to complete our projects on time and also apply for tertiary education and bursaries for next year.”
