THE Sports Challenge tournament featuring soccer and netball will be in full swing come Saturday in Dimbaza.

The initiative, now in its second year, is presented by the Department of Sport Buffalo City in partnership with Buffalo City Municipality (BCM).

Last year the event only featured netball, with nine clubs participating, according to department of sport, recreation, arts and culture acting assistant manager, Ronald Lottering.

“The aim is to revive netball and to establish a league in the area. The football [tournament is] will be used as talent identification and there will also be recreation involvement for mass participation,” Lottering said.

Preparatory meetings were held at BCM offices in King William’s Town where the planning was put in place.

Sport promotion officer: club development for BCM and project manager, Lungiswa Sikolo, was over the moon with the overwhelming support shown by all stakeholders.

“The concept document was presented and well accepted and in our last meeting we formed a LOC to lead the project. I am happy that the stakeholders such as King Sport Council, Dimbaza Sport Council, Victoria Mxenge Local Football Association, ward councillors, ward committee members and Dimbaza youth desk members were always present during our meetings,” Sikolo said.

He said the vent would prove to be a remarkable one, where all sport enthusiasts from all three wards in Dimbaza will be participating.

“We have decided to play the tournament on 16 and 23 September due to the total of participating teams, and format will be discussed in our final meeting on Wednesday at 2pm [yesterday],” Sikolo said. “While the games are in progress fans will be entertained by recreational games where young and old can participate,” he said.

Lottering said the project was growing beyond what they had determined. “To see such a full house of representatives present at our preparatory meetings is a clear indication that our event will be very successful,” Lottering said.
