FOUR students from the East London Kyokushinkan Karate Club have been selected to participate in two world tournaments that will take place in Japan and Russia.

Two junior members, Sonwabise Dokolwana and Nande Dlulane, will take part in the junior world tournament in Japan on November 25 and 26, and Litha Mthalalisi and Sthembele Mtete, will participate in the senior world tournament in Russia on December 9.

The International Federation of Karate (IFK) Kyokushinkan was founded in 1992 by Hanshi Steve Arneil with the aim to promote on an international basis, the teaching, practice and dissemination of information on Kyokushinkan karate, establish a unified system of kihon, kata and gradings within national organisations and provide an international identity to national organisations.

“Our club operates two dojo clubs in East London, one in Southernwood and one in Mdantsane unit 12.

“It is therefore a huge achievement for our club to have students who come from very humble backgrounds to have this prestigious opportunity to take part in these international events,” Mdantsane senior instructor, Dineo Dlulane said.

The club’s main objective is to promote good health, self-defense and discipline among men, women and the youth in society and to improve the lives of communities.

“Being selected for these tournaments will not only serve as a motivation for our students but will also be an encouragement to their peers, and to their communities that something great can come out of the Eastern Cape,” she added.

The trips to the world tournaments will cost R100 000 and the club is busy holding various fundraising initiatives to help pay for the students.

Members of the public are also asked to kindly contribute towards the trips, to help make sure the dreams of these hard-working young students come true.

To assist the students, contact senior instructor Dineo on 081-045-3838.
