Baseball proves one fine catch with youth
BASEBALLER Lwazi Mlondolozi, is on a mission to revive the sport.
The Billy Magengelele Baseball Revival Programme was launched in Mdantsane on May 27 at Sakhile Primary School, where Eagles coach and baseball player, Mlondolozi, introduced the finer skills of the sport to attendees..
The aim of the programme is to honour the late Sithembiso Magengelele, who was a well-known coach in the sport.
The GO! previously reported (“Baseball proves a hit” May 31) that the aim of the programme is to revive the sport in the Eastern Cape.
“The club has since managed to get assistance from Play Global in the United States of America. The organisation sent down an international coach, Zach Graesfer, to the Eastern Cape to assist with skills in developing the code of baseball. It was then that the club saw it as an opportunity to go on a bigger scale and not to focus only in Mdantsane, but to visit all the districts that are participating in baseball in the province,” Mlondolozi said.
“As much as baseball is not a priority code in the department of sport, recreation, arts and culture (DSRAC), we approached them to assist us in terms of transport and accommodation in three of the districts that we visited: Alfred Nzo, OR Tambo and Nelson Mandela Bay.”
During visits to various districts, pupils and coaches were taught the basic skills of baseball from how to hold the bat, pitching the ball, and swinging the bat.
“We have managed to reach out to 436 kids and 35 officials with only 13 schools participating. Unfortunately, close to 30 schools could not make it due to examinations,” Mlondolozi said.
