Back to Vanwyksdorp

go! Platteland - - CHITCHAT -

Your article about Vanwyksdorp in Platteland #11 brought back memories. My grandfather, Johannes Ulrich Gelderblom, was a miller on Boplaas near Vanwyksdorp, and my grandfather, Izak Johannes Gelderblom, farmed with wheat, fruit, vegetables and ostriches on Assegaaibos. After the Depression and the drop in the ostrich price, they were forced to move away to find another livelihood.

Many years ago, Dutch Gelderblom families launched a comprehensive research project with the aim of publishing a full family tree in book format. Some of the Gelderblom descendants in South Africa contributed, and this data was included in the 325-page Genealogie Gelderblom: Een Overzicht van Circa 2000 Gezinnen.

The result was that the South African Ian Gelderblom organised a Gelderblom reunion in Vanwyksdorp in 2007, because so many local Gelderbloms have roots in this town. About 150 people attended the reunion.

Your wonderful article has inspired me to visit Vanwyksdorp again!
