Here you can breathe!

Hercules du Toit was a mechanic in Nigel but had to leave, as he was allergic to something in the air. His daughter found out that Calitzdorp is reputed to have the cleanest air in the country – because the area abounds with spekboom (pork bush).

He inherited his mother’s love of antiques and decided to open up a shop. “For the first time in my lifetime I’m breathing clean air, and I haven’t needed medication in years,” he says.

His pride and joy is his collection of more than 3 000 Dinky Toys, and the Linnware and Kalahari Ware pottery he collected with his late wife. His shop is full of beautiful furniture, but by the time we went past there, our trailer was full – and the kitty pretty empty. >
