During a recent visit to Angela’s Safari Camp in Klaserie Private Nature Reserve next to the Kruger, we saw a wonderful example of camouflage. Our guide stopped near a rocky outcrop and said, “Can you see the owl?” We looked for about five minutes until he eventually had to point it out to us. The owl was a spotted eagle-owl and she was sitting on a nest, superbly camouflaged in a way that only occurs in nature. It reminded me of another owl sighting, this time in the Timbavati Game Reserve. We were watching hyenas when someone saw a movement in a tree nearby. We looked up and there was a white-faced owl on her nest in a tree orchid plant. She was also perfectly camouflaged. Two great examples of nature looking after her own.
