go! - - Ed’s Letter -

Picture editor Shelley Christians’ family album is full of photos of her and her sister posing in fields of flowers next to the N7.

When my sister Lee-Ann and I were kids (pictured here with my mom Salthea), we often went with my parents to visit my Ouma and Oupa in Calvinia. Watching the usually barren landscape explode into life in spring was a spectacular sight. My dad never really ventured off the main routes – he was a stickler for keeping to his estimated time of arrival. During the flower season of 2015, I accompanied journalist Sophia van Taak to Nieuwoudtville and she introduced me to the guest farm Papkuilsfontein. I did their flower tour and was astounded by the fields of katsterte. Last year I travelled all the way to Springbok with my son TJ to photograph the flowers for this issue. We stayed at unique places and created memories while braaiing under the stars. (He had no idea I could make a decent fire and braai!) We still reminisce about that trip. If you find yourself in the western and north-western parts of South Africa during August and September, make some detours and explore the local towns. Each has its own surprises. And take your camera. The photo opportunities are endless. For inspiration, check out this month’s Take Your Pic (p 58).
