Operation Carrot Cake!

go! - - Upfront Letters -

Your TV series Weg Agterpaaie Karoo inspired us to explore the Karoo during the April holidays. In one of the episodes, we learnt that Fox Ledeboer, who manages the cottages on the banks of the remote Gamkapoort Dam, loves carrot cake. I had already made a carrot cake to take to a friend in George, and I figured I might as well make one for Fox, too. We made it to the dam after a three-day road trip that saw us explore Gamkaskloof, Meiringspoort and Seweweekspoort. Bosluiskloof Pass down to the dam is so narrow that only one vehicle can use it safely. A chasm yawned on one side of the road and my motherin-law Joekie (86) and I were quite terrified! In some places we had to drive close to the edge because the road was washed away. We finally arrived at the dam, where everything was quiet and seemingly deserted. But Fox (pictured with the eyepatch) was there, and he was very impressed with his carrot cake. He told us that other travellers also occasionally deliver things to him, like newspapers or fresh bread. We were surprised to learn that he drives a 1400 Nissan bakkie – over that daunting pass! Fox’s gratitude made the carrot-cake expedition worthwhile, despite the bumps and nerve-racking heights.
