A buffalo taking a mud bath and a trail run with a view. Have we published your photo this month?

I was lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

TOAST SAYS: Myles is 16 years old and he already has a good eye for photography – check out his Instagram posts for more cool photos taken around South Africa. There was just enough light left in the day to take this photo. Half an hour later and it would have been too dark to use a shutter speed fast enough to freeze the moving chopper. Myles used a shutter speed of 1/320 second at ISO 200. His shutter speed could have been even faster had he increased the ISO to 800 or 1600. (The higher the ISO, the greater the sensitivity of your camera’s sensor to light. A fast shutter speed lets less light in, but this is mitigated by the higher ISO.) The drawback of this strategy is that you run the risk of getting a grainy image. But his photo is like his surname: sharp. The composition – with the helicopter about one third from the right of the frame – is simple and strong. The outline of the silhouette is clear so you know exactly what you’re looking at. I also like the colour of the mountains in the background. Good work, Myles. Weg for travel and wildlife pics from all over: Search for @gomagsa and @menseselense
