A sense of scale
There was much fanfare when the pass was opened on 10 January 1888. A parliamentarian from Cape Town – a certain Colonel F Schermbrucker – made the official opening remarks: “Ten thousand travellers,” he said, “will in future feast their eyes on this beautiful picture.” More than a century later and many more people than that have come from all over the world to drive, run and cycle the pass. “I’m always humbled when I stand on one of the switchbacks and look at the cars crawling up or tiptoeing down in first gear,” says Sam. “We are so small and the mountain is so big.”
