Long road ahead
Thomas Bain, supervising hundreds of convict labourers, did such a thorough job building the pass that it withstood thunderstorms and snowfalls for more than 120 years. In 2017, however, a major fire followed by a flash flood caused a section of the pass to subside. When the flood receded, the painstaking work of repairing the pass began. R30 million has been earmarked for the project and the pass has been closed until further notice.
