KEEN FOR A QUIETER BORDER POST?

go! - - Africa Classic Road Trip -

There are only two land border posts between Zambia and Tanzania: Tunduma and Kasesya. Tunduma is very busy because it carries plenty of truck traffic from the harbour in Dar es Salaam to Lusaka. If that sounds like bad news to you, head north from Kapishya to Mpulungu on Lake Tanganyika. Spend a couple of nights there, then drive to Kasesya, which is tiny and far less busy. The road from Mbala to Kasesya is poor, but it’s much better on the Tanzanian side and it soon becomes tar as you approach Sumbawanga. From Sumbawanga, turn south until you rejoin the main tar road to Dar es Salaam. Another option from Sumbawanga is to head north and drive this part of our route the other way around.
