ERNIE will be SA OPEN host

Golf Digest (South Africa) - - The Golf Life -

Five-time South African Open champion Ernie Els has been announced as the tournament host for the 104th championship at Glendower Golf Club from January 8-11. Els will be making his first appearance in the championship since playing at Serengeti in 2011. The Sunshine Tour have regained the commercial rights to one of the oldest tournaments in world golf and are in the process of rebuilding the stature of the tournament and establish it once again as a flagship event ( Sunshine Tour, page 95, September). There is no title sponsor, but the City of Ekurhuleni remains the main sponsor, and Els’ two charitable interests – Els for Autism and the Ernie Els & Fancourt Foundation – will be the two beneficiaries of any fundraising activities. It is hoped that Els’ influence will help boost the strength of the field.

“Ernie is willing to commit to the SA Open for a long period and is motivated to advancing it back to where it should be on the world stage,” said Sunshine Tour marketing and communications director Duncan Cruickshank.
