THE NEW FOX GOLF TEAM
When word came that Fox Sports had snared the US Open from NBC/Golf Channel and ESPN, even the timing had an edge to it. It was the night before the 2013 PGA Championship, and most of golf’s big shots were at a PGA of America dinner. News of the deal, which Golf Digest values at $1.1 billion over 12 years, had smartphones pinging from one end of the room to the other.
“Fox resonates with younger viewers, and maybe we can bring some of them to the sport,” says Mark Loomis, Fox’s coordinating producer of golf. His team includes Joe Buck and Greg Norman in the booth, former USGA executive director David Fay on rules, Brad Faxon, Corey Pavin and former Golf Channel star Holly Sonders. “Fox has always been really good at innovation,” Loomis says. “We will do anything we can to make the game a 3-D experience and not a 2-D experience.”
