St Francis Links CEO Jeff Clause is one of the brightest thinkers in the local golf industry, and the American had the novel idea of transforming the Jack Nicklaus-designed layout in the Eastern Cape to incorporate a Par-54 alternative to the main course. Clause’s course staff sited new teeing areas on every hole, and in June he launched the Ultimate Par-3 course, using the existing 18 greens. The holes vary in length between 75 and 130 metres (local resident Richard Vauqulin has the record of 51), and the club organises Monday competitions where players get round all 18 holes, using carts, in between two and three hours. The green fee is R300 for two golfers sharing a cart. “We encourage play before the field on any day, or in the late afternoons,” said Clause. “It provides a fun and speedy alternative way of occasionally playing golf, and is popular with our members.”
