MIXING GOLF AND CYCLING
When news spread within the golf industry that the MoreGolf group – who own The Pro Shop, World of Golf franchises and playmoregolf – had acquired Cycle Lab to form MoreCorp, it underlined the growth of cycling and lack of it in golf in South Africa. “We looked closely at our golf businesses and realised that we had invested heavily and had achieved as much as we could, but were still looking for a way to expand our interests,” said joint MoreCorp managing director Darryl Egdes ( left).
“There are not as many beginners taking up golf compared to cycling, so we had to diversify. We identified that cycling in South Africa is where golf was 15 to 20 years ago. So we combined two specialist retail businesses and the results so far have exceeded expectations.”
One of MoreCorp’s first innovations was to partner with the wellness division of Momentum to create the Momentum Million Rand Challenge, a hole-in-one contest at the World of Golf in Woodmead and five other golf villages on the first Saturday of every month, after which a final shootout will take place for R1 million.
