When news spread within the golf in­dus­try that the MoreGolf group – who own The Pro Shop, World of Golf fran­chises and play­more­golf – had ac­quired Cy­cle Lab to form MoreCorp, it un­der­lined the growth of cy­cling and lack of it in golf in South Africa. “We looked closely at our golf busi­nesses and re­alised that we had in­vested heav­ily and had achieved as much as we could, but were still look­ing for a way to ex­pand our in­ter­ests,” said joint MoreCorp man­ag­ing di­rec­tor Dar­ryl Egdes ( left).

“There are not as many be­gin­ners tak­ing up golf com­pared to cy­cling, so we had to di­ver­sify. We iden­ti­fied that cy­cling in South Africa is where golf was 15 to 20 years ago. So we com­bined two spe­cial­ist re­tail busi­nesses and the re­sults so far have ex­ceeded ex­pec­ta­tions.”

One of MoreCorp’s first in­no­va­tions was to part­ner with the well­ness di­vi­sion of Mo­men­tum to cre­ate the Mo­men­tum Mil­lion Rand Chal­lenge, a hole-in-one contest at the World of Golf in Wood­mead and five other golf vil­lages on the first Satur­day of ev­ery month, after which a fi­nal shootout will take place for R1 mil­lion.
