Golf Digest (South Africa) - - Hats Off -

The Legend course at Belle Mare Plage was the first 18-hole resort/estate course built in Mauritius and remains one of the most beautiful and challenging layouts you’ll find on the island. From the time it opened in 1994 it has been host to either the Mauritius Open or MCB Open/Tour Champs. Hotel guests are spoilt for choice at Belle Mare Plage with two good courses to play. The Legend is a short walk from hotel room to the first tee, and the Links is a five-minute drive. Guests have free access to both courses during their stay.

The Legend course has a South African connection in its origin. The Constance group – with hotels in Mauritius, Seychelles, Maldives and Madagascar – hired Durban architect Alan Barnard to design the course. He and partner Tony Falkson helped shape the short but demanding layout from thick forest and swampy terrain. Hugh Baiocchi was the star name player associated with the project, and has subsequently received the acclaim as course designer.

The short 17th ( bottom left of main picture) is the signature hole, a par 3 on a rocky islet on a lagoon where volcanic rock was blasted down to accommodate the large green.
