Highland Gate in Mpumalanga.

Several years have passed since Ernie Els completed the design of the Highland Gate course on a residential estate in the Drakensberg escarpment of Mpumalanga, just a few hours by car from the heart of Gauteng. It is now officially open for play, and attracting rave reviews from those who have been there.

Getting to Highland Gate in the beginning required a bakkie or 4x4 to traverse a rough country road from nearby Dullstroom, but Century Property Developments, who acquired the once bankrupt estate and relaunched it as a getaway destination, have had the road graded and surfaced, so that the journey is now an easy and pleasant one.

Highland Gate, with its numerous elevation changes amidst hilly Drakensberg terrain, is an exciting course to play, offering a multitude of challenges from first hole to last. Cool season grasses on the fairways make it playable all year round.

Els first visited the site 10 years ago, and he loves the location. “It reminds me of the Scottish Highlands, a place such as Gleneagles. The expansive views seem to go on forever.”
