IVANNA SAMU ADDS THE WOMEN’S SA STROKEPLAY TITLE TO HER SA AMATEUR CROWN.
Gauteng teenager Ivanna Samu now holds both major women’s titles, after a three-stroke victory in the 54-hole Sanlam Women’s Strokeplay at Glendower GC. The 16-year-old from Ruimsig CC won the 2014 Amateur crown last July at her home club.
Samu struggled in an opening 77, but followed that with 70-73 to leave her rivals behind. Her final round began promisingly with an eagle three at the second hole, and she turned in 34 to lead by seven. But then came three inexplicable double-bogeys from 11 to 13, which meant she was just one ahead.
“I started so well and don’t know what happened on the back nine,” said the Grade 11 learner at Curro Aurora school in Randburg, who became the second youngest winner of the Amateur last year. “I saw all my friends and family walking with me, and said to myself, ‘Ivanna, what are you doing, this is not how you play golf!’ ”
The pep talk helped. Samu birdied the next three holes to restore order and closed with two pars. Cara Gorlei (Milnerton) was the runner-up from defending champion Carrie Park (Irene). “This is a huge achievement for me, and I’m proud of how I played on such a challenging course,” said Samu. “I finished second here to Nicole Garcia in a pro event earlier in the year, and it was great to see her walking with us.”
