CENTRAL GAUTENG WIN FINAL UNDER-23 IPT
In a fitting end to the 45th and final Under23 Interprovincial, Central Gauteng completed an unbeaten week at Country Club Johannesburg by edging Ekurhuleni for the title by half a point on a games count. The SAGA believes the U-23 tournament no longer serves a meaningful purpose and it will be replaced by another event.
Central and Ekurhuleni outplayed their four other A section opponents on the Rocklands course, and halved their own clash 6-6 on day three. Central led 3-1 in the foursomes, but Ekurhuleni fought back with five singles wins. There were two close matches on day four, with Ekurhuleni beating defending champs Gauteng North 6½-5½ and Central edging Western Province 7-5.
On the final day Ekurhu- leni thumped KZN 10-2, so Central needed to beat the Blue Bulls 9½-2½ for outright victory. They did exactly that, first taking a 3½-½ foursomes lead then winning six singles, to lift the title for the 26th time. Ludovic Bax and Jason Rossiter starred for Central, winning 8 out of 10 points, with Matthew Kiewitz, Kyle Barker, Rupert Kaminiski and Werner van Wyk earning 7 points. Fritz Orren won 6½ and Jason Viljoen 6.
A Section MVP honours went to Gauteng North’s Rosswell Sinclair with 9½ points. Sinclair, Chris van Tonder (Ekurhuleni), Michael Sherriff and Cole Cruickshank (both WP) won five out of five singles.
With no future tournament, winning the B section counted little for unbeaten Southern Cape. The Garden Route team halved with Free State on opening day and then compiled four comfortable wins. Their team comprised Julien Sale (8 points), Cameron Moralee, Franklin Manchest, Alan Lones, Caylum Boon (7½), Andre Nel (7), Riaan Grootboom (4) and Hans-Jurie Human (3).
MVP honours were shared by Sale and Therion Nel (Free State) with 8 points each.
