The Arabella Golf Club in the Western Cape traditionally hosts a competition to coincide with each of golf’s four major championships. It started a few years ago with the Open – where the Arabella winner received a “claret jug” – and expanded to all four majors. The format is the same for the three majors played in America, and slightly different for the Open. Each competitor draws a player from the weekend field, those who make the 36-hole cut. For the Masters he or she was given a scorecard containing a drawn player’s Saturday score at Augusta National. After a shotgun start at Arabella on the Sunday, everyone went out to see if they could improve on their partner’s score. This year Albert Lubbe drew Masters champion Jordan Spieth, and posted a betterball score of 47 points to claim the Arabella “green jacket.”
