Behind the Scenes

Golf Digest (South Africa) - - Contents -

housands of tips and millions of words – Golf Digest South Africa celebrates its 20th anniversary with the October issue. There has never been a shortage of things to write about and our biggest headache each month is what to leave out of the magazine.

It’s only natural that we chose Ernie Els to grace the cover of this significant milestone. GDSA launched in the spring of 1995, when Ernie was already a major champion, and he has been the most successful SA golfer over the past 20 years. While his powers on the course have begun to wane, he remains one of South Africa’s most popular sportsmen ever and a fitting cover story this month.

We arrived on the scene at a time when the world was starting to go mad aboutthegame;embracinggolf’sspirit, anditsgrowingpopularitywasinfectious. The local version first sold for R9.95 and was a mix of international material, sourced from Golf Digest, and local content. We’ve tried to maintain that balance ever since.

The look and feel of GDSA has always moved with the times, constantly being revamped and redesigned, most recently with our May 2015 issue, it has benefitted from fresh ideas, innovations and different formats, and has won several awards for best sports magazine in South Africa. The content has remained essentially the same: Instruction, player profiles, major championship previews, equipment and travel, but always with a new look to it. – The Editors
