If lightning is in the area and you feel in danger of getting struck, don’t wait for a warning horn to sound, or for a course marshall to come and chase you off. Rule 6-8a says if you feel in danger from lightning, you can discontinue play and take shelter on the spot – even if it’s during a tournament (in that case, notify the tournament committee as soon as practicable, otherwise you risk being disqualified). Be sure to mark your ball’s position if you need to lift it. Failure to do so comes with a one-stroke penalty when play resumes.
