OPEN ROTA SET AT 10
Confirmation of Royal Portrush as the 2019 Open venue brings the number of Open courses to 10 on the modern rota. The 148th Open will return to Northern Ireland for the first time since 1951, when Englishman Max Faulkner triumphed.
“We are happy with 10 venues,” said new R&A chief executive Martin Slumbers. “There are no discussions about other courses. Portrush was the big decision to make.” The early days of his tenure have seen a hasty re-jigging of the Open TV contract, after the BBC decided to pull the plug a year early. It will be televised by Sky in 2016. “The BBC asked us after the Open to get out of their contract, and Sky stepped in with gusto.”
