There was a time when driv­ers were de­signed to work re­ally well when hit per­fectly. But to­day’s club engi­neers know that’s not the real world. Says Call­away’s Evan Gibbs: “A lot of club­head design is about try­ing to min­imise the dam­age of what hap­pens when you in­cor­rectly de­liver the club­head to the ball.” In other words, the new­est driv­ers might get you bet­ter re­sults than maybe your swing de­serves. Some mod­els use weight­ing or aero­dy­namic fea­tures to in­crease your swing speed. Oth­ers help your misses go fur­ther and straighter via thin faces and more sta­ble heads.
