SKINNER WINS AGAIN IN GAUTENG NORTH
William Skinner, a two-time winner in 2015, began the new senior amateur season with victory in the Gauteng North Open at Wingate Park. Two 74s gave the 55-year-old Zwartkop player a four-shot margin over home club member Gordon Wessels (72-76). Tied third on 149 were Jock Wellington, Greg Gleeson, Bruno van Eck, Derik Piek, Johan Swart and Mark O’Brien. Skinner moved to No 5 on the national senior rankings, and Wessels to No 11. ** Gerard Blaauw (CC Johannesburg) had his breakthrough victory in the Free State Senior Open at the age of 59, scoring 72 in a weather-shortened 18holer at Bloemfontein GC. Next on 73 were Joe Phiri (Rustenburg) and Chris Delport (Zwartkop), with Stephen Rossiter (Krugersdorp), Conrad de Beer (Kimberley) and Stanley de Beer (Bloem) on 74. ** Former SA international Ryan Dreyer (Killarney 70-69) won the first MidAmateur tournament of the year, the Central Gauteng Open, after a playoff at Ruimsig with Elton James (Westlake 68-71) and Neil Fusedale (Kyalami 72-67). Defending champion Gerlou Roux (Bellville 72-69) was fourth ahead of Stephen Johnston (Ruimsig 73-69). James has now been a runner-up in five of his last eight events.
