MARCO STEYN Free State Open, Maccauvlei GC SCORES: 68-69 (137) RUNNERS-UP: Kyle McClatchie, James du Preez (137) HOW HE DID IT: The 18-year-old from Modderfontein birdied the first playoff hole to win a weather-shortened event, his first major provincial victory since the 2014 Northern Open. Steyn spoke with a mature voice afterwards: “After missing the cut badly at the Joburg Open I realised that I had put myself under too much pressure to perform at a level I’m not ready for yet. I had to start at the bottom in junior golf and work my way up, and it’s the same with the amateur circuit now.” NOTABLE: Angus Ellis-Cole (Glendower) had a back nine of 29 in a first round 67, finishing with five consecutive birdies.
