GREENWAYS GOLF SOCIETY IN THE CAPE
Following your article ( November) on Duckhook Golf in Gauteng, I want to inform you about the Greenways Golf Society in Cape Town. We launched in January 2014, playing one Sunday a month at di erent courses – Devonvale, Stellenbosch, Erinvale, Langebaan and Malmesbury among them. From 35 players in 2014 we grew to 55 last year. Most regulars belong to a club, but we also have unaffiliated players. Our elds average 28. We try to negotiate good group rates as some of the courses are expensive to play even if affiliated.
The format is individual Stableford and we keep track of scoring throughout the year. We have a FedEx Cup over ve rounds, where you play for points based on where you nish in the eld, and other competitions, including a “Players Championship.” We toured to the Garden Route in September of 2014 and 2015.
Our handicap system gives more people the opportunity to win, and has worked well. We cut ruthlessly, especially anyone scoring over 40 points. We nd that handicap cuts help people lift their games. Two players who scored 44 and 43 points respectively in the Players Championship were o scratch for the rst game of 2016. I believe our handicap system makes us unique and reduces the possibility of guys manipulating their handicaps.
We have a Facebook page, Greenways Golf Society, and anyone wishing to join us can contact me at email@example.com.
