SCOTS DOMINATE SA AMATEUR (AGAIN)
Craig Ross. ritish players have now won six of the last 11 Sanlam SA Amateur finals after Scotland’s Craig Ross defeated Modderfontein’s Dylan Naidoo 3/1 at George GC. Four of the last six Amateurs have been won by Scots, while the last two SA Strokeplay titles have gone to an Irishman and a Frenchman.
The 23-year-old Ross, from Kirkhill GC, finished one behind compatriot Rory Franssen in the 36-hole Proudfoot Trophy Qualifying before powering his way through the matchplay draw. In the final Ross birdied 17 and 18 to take a 2up lead at lunch, which he extended to 4up through 22 holes. Naidoo fought back magnificently with four consecutive birdies from the 30th to reduce the deficit to one, but the Scot birdied the 34th and 35th to close him out 3/1.
“This was the best matchplay game I’ve ever been involved in, said Naidoo, the 2015 SA Boys Strokeplay champion. “I really fought as hard as I could and left everything on the course. I played as well as I could have.”
