Craig Ross. ri­tish play­ers have now won six of the last 11 San­lam SA Am­a­teur finals af­ter Scot­land’s Craig Ross de­feated Mod­der­fontein’s Dy­lan Naidoo 3/1 at Ge­orge GC. Four of the last six Am­a­teurs have been won by Scots, while the last two SA Stroke­play ti­tles have gone to an Ir­ish­man and a French­man.

The 23-year-old Ross, from Kirkhill GC, fin­ished one be­hind com­pa­triot Rory Franssen in the 36-hole Proud­foot Tro­phy Qual­i­fy­ing be­fore pow­er­ing his way through the match­play draw. Naidoo was also im­pres­sive in reach­ing the fi­nal, despatch­ing Cen­tral Gaut­eng team­mate David Mey­ers 2/1 in the sec­ond round, then lo­cal fa-

In the fi­nal Ross birdied 17 and 18 to take a 2up lead at lunch, which he ex­tended to 4up through 22 holes. Naidoo fought back mag­nif­i­cently with four con­sec­u­tive birdies from the 30th to re­duce the deficit to one, but the Scot birdied the 34th and 35th to close him out 3/1.

“This was the best match­play game I’ve ever been in­volved in, said Naidoo, the 2015 SA Boys Stroke­play cham­pion. “I re­ally fought as hard as I could and left ev­ery­thing on the course. I played as well as I could have.”
