ROYAL HOBART obart, capital of Tasmania, is an hour’s ight south from Melbourne. The airport has a rural feel to it, much like George in the Garden Route. Next door is Royal Hobart, where Jack Nicklaus won an Australian Open in 1971. We were in for a surprise while having lunch in the clubhouse. In walked a South African friend we hadn’t seen for 20 years, Colin Buxton, formerly of Humewood and Grahamstown golf clubs in the Eastern Cape, who left a position at Rhodes University for Tasmania in the mid-90s. What’s more, he is the incoming club captain, which meant we played golf with him at his attractive parkland course the following day.
Buxton today is one of Australia’s foremost marine biologists, who travels widely, and he loves the Hobart
