ROYAL HOBART obart, cap­i­tal of Tas­ma­nia, is an hour’s ight south from Mel­bourne. The air­port has a ru­ral feel to it, much like George in the Gar­den Route. Next door is Royal Hobart, where Jack Nicklaus won an Aus­tralian Open in 1971. We were in for a sur­prise while hav­ing lunch in the club­house. In walked a South African friend we hadn’t seen for 20 years, Colin Bux­ton, formerly of Hume­wood and Gra­ham­stown golf clubs in the Eastern Cape, who left a po­si­tion at Rhodes Univer­sity for Tas­ma­nia in the mid-90s. What’s more, he is the in­com­ing club cap­tain, which meant we played golf with him at his at­trac­tive park­land course the fol­low­ing day.

Bux­ton to­day is one of Aus­tralia’s fore­most ma­rine bi­ol­o­gists, who trav­els widely, and he loves the Hobart
