A hole-in-one is going to make a difference to anyone’s card, but it provided me with huge momentum. I birdied the 16th to finish level par for the round. I then played the final 36 holes (it was a five-round event) in 7-under to finish T-13, earning one of 20 cards.
ON THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN MEN’S AND WOMEN’S PROFESSIONAL GOLF
There’s obviously less money in women’s golf – that’s why we work extra hard, especially during Pro-Ams, to entertain our sponsors and market our tour.Amateur partners often remark that they prefer playing with women pros as they interact more and actually act like the fact that they want to be out there.
ON HANGING OUT WITH THE SOUTH AFRICANS ON TOUR
During my college career I saw Bertine Strauss (University of Texas) a few times, so we got to know each other.Ashleigh Simon and I have tried to help her with anything she may need during her rookie LPGA Tour season. Lee-Anne Pace kind of keeps to herself, but we all try to fly the South African flag high. I’m likely to be eligible for American citizenship next year and will definitely take dual-citizenship. But I will always play for South Africa.
ON BEING ABLE TO COMMUNICATE IN FOUR LANGUAGES
My family is of Portuguese descent.Although I’m not fluent in the language, I can communicate, so that’ll be a nice advantage during the Olympics in Rio. Our family constantly speak Afrikaans at home (during this interview, conducted via FaceTime, Paula spoke fluent Afrikaans to her dog in the room), and I took Spanish at high school.
ON ALMOST HITTING THE SPONSOR’S CAR
In the second round of the 2015 Kia Classic I was waiting for what seemed like an eternity to play my second shot to the par four 18th hole, which has water down the length of the hole. I was day-dreaming and suddenly thought that the sponsor’s car looked rather close to the green (on a platform on the water). I was going to miss the cut and didn’t focus enough on my shot which I had to play from a downhill lie. The ball went straight right off the clubface, and missed the car by centimetres! Just shows you how powerful the mind is and that you can never let your guard down.
