THE MAGIC ZONE

Golf Digest (South Africa) - - The Locker Room -

The hitting area in the swing is between two points, which I call the magic zone. When the club is parallel to the ground on your backswing – near hip high – and when the club reaches the opposite point going towards the target. Professionals are great in this area even though they might be in different positions at the top of the backswing and follow through. The hitting area is where the magic happens.

I have a practice drill to help feel the position on the backswing and the position through the impact area. Stand comfortably and put your hands together in front of you. Bend over from your hips into a golf posture. Then open your arms to the side. To feel the backswing now put your left hand on to your right. This position will help you feel where you should be before you turn to the top of the backswing. To feel the through position, put your right hand on to your left hand and feel you have made a little transfer on to your left foot.

This drill helps you feel these important positions and keeps your shoulders relatively square through the hitting zone. This helps with direction and consistency.
