BUNKER PLAY / WHEN TO LEAN AND NOT TO LEAN

Golf Digest (South Africa) - - The Locker Room -

Many golfers don’t understand how to add or reduce loft in bunker play. There are two basic greenside bunker shots. 1) Splash and run, 2) The high softy.

Shaft lean has a profound effect on loft and how you deliver the club into the sand. If the shaft is leaning forward, there will be less loft and the ball will come out lower and run more. You need to drive the legs and splash the sand out of the bunker. If the shaft is level with the ball, the club will have more loft, and the ball will come out higher and run less. The key here is to throw the bounce of the club. Let the hands pass the body, and the bounce will do the work. The sand is your friend. Use it.
