Playing the Golf Digest Top 100.
Any passionate golfer should try and play each and every one of Golf Digest’s Top 100 Courses in South Africa. It is difficult to believe that some of us regard it as too much trouble and not worth the effort. I am a 63-year old member of Stellenbosch Golf Club with a handicap ranging between 16 and 18. I love to play different courses, because I believe that every course wants to tell you a story. Recently retired, I took stock and realised that I had played 89 of the Top 100 Courses, as rated in the March 2016 issue of Golf Digest.
In October last year I went on a 3-week golf holiday / tour to play the remaining 11 courses and achieve my goal. I drove 6 200 kilometres around the country. I made the long trek from Stellenbosch to Kathu in the Northern Cape, drove from there to Gauteng North and theVaal River region, east to Dullstroom in Mpumalanga, and then south to the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands and the Drakensberg mountains. From there I made my way to the KZN South Coast, before embarking on another long drive to my final 100th course, Katberg in the Eastern Cape. Here is a summary of my trip:
