REMARKABLE FEAT ON PAR 5S AT KRUGERSDORP

Golf Digest is an important archive for recording unusual feats in club golf in South Africa. If these feats were never mentioned in the magazine, many of them would be forgotten. I would encourage golfers and golf clubs to send you this information, as a member did with the story about the Metropolitan club golfer who shot 63-7-56 in a club competition (December issue). Hopefully one day you can collect them all and republish them, as the SA Golf Annual used to do in the old days. My own story goes back more than 40 years to a special round at Krugersdorp Golf Club, where I am still a member, with three good friends of mine, Martin and Hugh James, and Rodney Fletcher. Martin, who still plays golf at the club, achieved something which I believe is unsurpassed in the history of golf in South Africa. I’d love to know the odds on that happening. Beginning his round on the tenth tee, Martin had a par on the 12th, his first par 5 of the round. He then made a birdie on the next par 5, the 17th. On the second nine he began with an eagle three on the par-5 first. On the final par 5, the eighth, he hit a 3-wood for his second shot which was heading straight for the pin.We looked for the ball around the green, and then Rodney went to the hole and found it there – in the hole for an albatross two! Martin shot a 70 that day off his 5-handicap. Gordon Slabbert, Gauteng
