Golf course ar­chi­tect Douw van der Merwe has died at the age of 63. Born in Senekal in the Free State, ed­u­cated at Afrikaans BHS (Affies) and Pre­to­ria Univer­sity, where he stud­ied land­scape ar­chi­tec­ture, he be­gan his ca­reer as an ur­ban de­signer, be­fore be­com­ing in­volved in golf es­tate projects in the mid-1990s, in­clud­ing Leop­ard Creek where he as­sisted with the rout­ing and res­i­den­tial de­sign. He first cap­tured at­ten­tion as a course de­signer in his own right with the No 2 course at Mount Edge­combe, com­pleted in 1997. He is cred­ited with sev­eral Top 100 cour­ses through his com­pany DDV De­sign, in­clud­ing Leg­end, Parys and Ea­gle Canyon, plus Koro Creek, Jackal Creek, Banken­veld and Phakalane in Botswana.
