DOUW VAN DER MERWE, 1953-2017
Golf course architect Douw van der Merwe has died at the age of 63. Born in Senekal in the Free State, educated at Afrikaans BHS (Affies) and Pretoria University, where he studied landscape architecture, he began his career as an urban designer, before becoming involved in golf estate projects in the mid-1990s, including Leopard Creek where he assisted with the routing and residential design. He first captured attention as a course designer in his own right with the No 2 course at Mount Edgecombe, completed in 1997. He is credited with several Top 100 courses through his company DDV Design, including Legend, Parys and Eagle Canyon, plus Koro Creek, Jackal Creek, Bankenveld and Phakalane in Botswana.
