Jayden Schaper (right) completed three legs of the elusive Junior Slam in South African golf when he won the Nomads SA Boys U-19 title at Langebaan on the West Coast. The 16-year-old Ebotse Links (Benoni) member defeated SA Amateur champion Christo Lamprecht (Pinnacle Point) in a suddendeath playoff after they had tied on a 14-underpar total of 274 in windy conditions the final day. Schaper had 22 birdies, against the 18 birdies and two eagles from Lamprecht.
Schaper was 11 when he won the SA U-13 title at Nelspruit in 2012, and 14 when he captured the SA U-15 crown at Fish River Sun in 2015. He can become the first player to complete the Junior Slam if he wins the SA U-17 title at Rustenburg in July.
Lamprecht had set the early pace at Langebaan with opening rounds of 66 and 69, but he was caught by Schaper with rounds of 68 and 67. Wilco Nienaber (Bloemfontein) was also for the 36-hole lead. A third round 66 from Schaper put him four clear, before Lamprecht came back to tie him with a closing 69.
Luke Mayo (Mount Edgecombe) was third on 278, ahead of Nienaber and Garrick Higgo (De Zalze) on 279.Tied sixth on 280 were Andre van Dyk (Klerksdorp), defending champion Deon Germishuys (Strand) and Ruan Groenewald (White River).
