25 YEARS OF SANLAM CANCER CHALLENGE
The Sanlam Cancer Challenge is one of South African golf’s great success stories, and this year, the 25th anniversary of the partnership between the event and the Cancer Association of SA, the support of club golfers is being celebrated. Each year since 1993, hundreds of Sanlam Cancer Challenge club competitions have raised valuable funds for CANSA. Members of more than 400 clubs have got behind it, and the prize for the best players has been qualifying for the National Finals, first played at San Lameer and now hosted at Sun City.
“We are proud of the partnership and the difference this has made in the ongoing battle against this disease,” said Sanlam Sponsorship Manager Gary van Loggerenberg. “From the first competition 25 years ago to what we have today, every golfer who has supported this event can also be proud of the role he or she has played to ensure its success.”
The annual fundraising effort, which exceeds R3-million, contributes more than 10 percent of CANSA’s annual budget. It helps fund 11 CANSA care homes, 5 TLC facilities and 9 mobile clinics, every year supporting 15 000 people affected by cancer. The Challenge has also alerted more awareness of cancer, helping to take the message of the value of healthy lifestyles and preventative screenings to over 875 000 golfers. Eight percent of CANSA’s national cancer screenings come directly at events.
