Titleist make special head covers for each major. I received a set of red stars and stripes US Open covers, and a Scotty Cameron putter cover with a cow and bell to recognise Wisconsin’s renowned dairy industry. I didn’t use them in the tournament, opting to keep them as a memento instead. ON ALMOST PACKING IT IN I’ve had a pretty consistent career, but for a two-year spell (2014-15) I battled with my confidence. I played on the Euro Challenge Tour, which is very expensive if you’re not playing well. I seriously considered giving up last year, and even began studying again. I have an accounting degree from the University of Stellenbosch and am now studying for my CFA designation (Chartered Financial Analyst). But it’s funny how this game works. The moment golf was not the most important thing in my life, my confidence returned and the better I played. I won again in August last year at the Sun City Challenge. Then, this year I won two weeks before and a week after my wedding in May!

My wife Alra (pictured right) is a qualified PGA professional and has caddied for me a few times on the Sunshine Tour. It helps that she understands the demands of the game and can relate to the misconception from the public that professional golfers lead a glamorous lifestyle.

I’ve been to the Euro Q School seven times – four times to Final Stage – and am yet to earn a card. I may try something different this year. I think the Web.com Tour in America is calling. I prefer the courses and weather stateside and feel confident that I can compete there. ON BUILDING HIS BRAND I changed my Twitter handle to my actual name before the US Open. My previous handle was a play on words relating to Oliver Twist @TwisT1010. But it makes no sense not to have your name in the handle, because people don’t know who it is straight away. @olliebekkergolf is a much better fit.
