Kevin Levey is to be congratulated on this tremendous survey, and the work undertaken to achieve these results. There might be some oddities among the courses mentioned, and notable omissions, but generally the survey has confirmed many of the courses we have always considered difficult to play, and brought forward some interesting new ones. Golf Digest published its own list of the 25 Toughest Courses in South Africa in 2007 (May), and six of the courses which featured on that list – Wild Coast, Atlantic Beach, Beachwood, East London, Pezula and Zimbali – are not in the top 100 of Kevin’s list.
The course we had to investigate was Leeudoringstad, a 9-holer in the North West which averaged 6.18 shots above handicap, nearly a shot tougher than the Gary Player CC. Our North West Golf Union contact, Leon Bevan, confirmed that long rough, poor greens and high-handicap members could have influenced the unusually high scoring,
