MOOLMAN TOPS MID-AM RANKINGS
Louis Moolman, 32, from Cullinan GC in Gauteng North, moved to No 1 in the Mid-Amateur rankings after victory in the Western Province Mid-Am at Steenberg (68-67), and second place in the Boland Mid-Am at Arabella. After six events as a Mid-Amateur competitor this year, Moolman has had a win, four seconds, and a T-4.
Gerlou Roux (Bellville), 41, won the Boland title (71-72) after a playoff against Moolman. Ruan Botha (Randpark), 34, won the North West Mid-Am (72-69) at Rustenburg, having won the Southern Cape title in May. Hugo Maritz (Humewood), 39, shot 68-66 to win the Eastern Province Mid-Am at Wedgewood.
Wendell Bossenger (CCJ) won the KZN title on 73-71 at Durban CC. Sam Simpson had a runnerup finish in the Italian Under-16 championship, and partnered team-mates Martin Vorster and Casey Jarvis to second place in the team competition. Southern Cape golfing stalwart John Mitchell, age 68, has died after a long illness. An honorary life member at George Golf Club, where he was an 11-time club champion, he represented Eastern Province at Interprovincials through the 1970s and 1980s when Southern Cape was a sub-union of the EPGU, and was a Springbok reserve in 1974. He won the Cape Province Open five times and several EP championships. He was one of the fun-loving characters of amateur golf in his era, whose pranks are still remembered. His son Nicholas has been a star performer for Southern Cape in recent years and has won the George club champs seven times and the Cape Province Open in 2010.
