Hirsch has seen plenty of sold-for-cheap jewellery that turned out to be real diamonds or platinum. In general, fine jewellery will have a hallmark (a stamp on the inside of a ring or the clasp of a necklace that says, for instance, 18K, 18kt or 18ct for 18-carat gold), seem heavier than costume-jewellery counterparts and feature prongs to hold gems in place. But ‘even costume jewellery can sell for R2 000 to R15 000 or more if it’s vintage,’ Hirsch says. If you’re unsure, get it appraised.
