Graaff-reinet Protective Workplace operates as newly independent NPO
GRAAFF-REINET — The Graaffreinet Protective Workplace has been operating as a newly independent NPO these past couple of months as a mission project of the Karoo Community Church.
The Protective Workplace, which was founded in 1981, is a non-profit organisation for adults with disabilities from all areas in and around Graaff-reinet. The organisation has been under new independent management called Boundless, since April 18.
The organisation seeks out to provide disabled adults with physical and psychological disabilities who are unable to compete in the open labour market, with an opportunity to work and learn in an environment suited to their needs.
The Protective Workplace, situated in Graaff-reinet’s industrial area at 4 Industry Street, boasts various departments providing different skills. These departments range from needlework, Shweshwe items, wood work and a tree nursery.
All this items are available for sale at the Protective Workplace’s premises for the public to view and purchase.
This organisation’s management believes that through this initiative, the quality of life, self-image and value systems of these people are improved significantly.
This is due to the fact that they are cared for both physically and psychologically and are taught life and income generating skills.
The organisation would like to encourage any able-bodied individuals interested in volunteering their skills or simply their time especially those skilled in needlework, to come along and volunteer.
The Protective Workplace would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to their existing volunteers.
The organisation would also like to invite and encourage disabled adults aged 18+ to join the programme.
This year, the organisation will be an official beneficiary of Casual Day - a national campaign managed by the National Council of and for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) - taking place on Friday, September 1, and residents of Graaff-reinet are encouraged to participate in this fun fundraising initiative that will see a portion of its profits benefitting the Protective Workplace.
