Graaff-rei­net Pro­tecti­ve Work­pla­ce o­pe­ra­tes as ne­w­ly in­de­pen­dent NPO

GRAAFF-REI­NET — The Graaff­rei­net Pro­tecti­ve Work­pla­ce has been o­pe­ra­ting as a ne­w­ly in­de­pen­dent NPO the­se past cou­ple of mont­hs as a mis­si­on pro­ject of the Ka­roo Com­mu­ni­ty C­hurch.

The Pro­tecti­ve Work­pla­ce, which was foun­ded in 1981, is a non-pro­fit or­ga­ni­sa­ti­on for a­dults with di­sa­bi­li­ties from all a­re­as in and a­round Graaff-rei­net. The or­ga­ni­sa­ti­on has been un­der new in­de­pen­dent ma­na­ge­ment cal­led Bound­less, sin­ce A­pril 18.

The or­ga­ni­sa­ti­on see­ks out to pro­vi­de di­sa­bled a­dults with phy­si­cal and psy­cho­lo­gi­cal di­sa­bi­li­ties who are u­na­ble to com­pe­te in the o­pen la­bour mar­ket, with an op­por­tu­ni­ty to work and learn in an en­vi­ron­ment sui­ted to t­heir needs.

The Pro­tecti­ve Work­pla­ce, si­tu­a­ted in Graaff-rei­net’s in­dus­tri­al a­rea at 4 In­du­stry S­treet, bo­as­ts va­ri­ous de­part­ments pro­vi­ding dif­fe­rent skills. The­se de­part­ments ran­ge from need­le­work, Shweshwe i­tems, wood work and a tree nur­se­ry.

All this i­tems are a­vai­la­ble for sa­le at the Pro­tecti­ve Work­pla­ce’s pre­mi­ses for the pu­blic to view and pur­cha­se.

This or­ga­ni­sa­ti­on’s ma­na­ge­ment be­lie­ves that through this i­ni­ti­a­ti­ve, the qu­a­li­ty of li­fe, self-i­ma­ge and va­lue sy­s­tems of the­se pe­op­le are im­pro­ved sig­ni­fi­cant­ly.

This is due to the fact that t­hey are ca­red for both phy­si­cal­ly and psy­cho­lo­gi­cal­ly and are taug­ht li­fe and in­co­me ge­ne­ra­ting skills.

The or­ga­ni­sa­ti­on would li­ke to en­coura­ge any a­ble-bo­died in­di­vi­du­als in­te­rested in vo­lun­teer­ing t­heir skills or sim­ply t­heir ti­me es­pe­ci­al­ly tho­se skil­led in need­le­work, to co­me al­ong and vo­lun­teer.

The Pro­tecti­ve Work­pla­ce would li­ke to ex­tend a he­art­felt thank you to t­heir ex­is­ting vo­lun­teers.

The or­ga­ni­sa­ti­on would al­so li­ke to in­vi­te and en­coura­ge di­sa­bled a­dults a­ged 18+ to join the pro­gram­me.

This y­e­ar, the or­ga­ni­sa­ti­on will be an of­fi­ci­al be­ne­fi­ci­a­ry of Ca­su­al Day - a na­ti­o­nal cam­paign ma­na­ged by the Na­ti­o­nal Coun­cil of and for Per­sons with Di­sa­bi­li­ties (NCPD) - ta­king pla­ce on F­ri­day, Sep­tem­ber 1, and re­si­dents of Graaff-rei­net are en­coura­ged to par­ti­ci­pa­te in this fun fun­drai­sing i­ni­ti­a­ti­ve that will see a por­ti­on of its pro­fits be­ne­fit­ting the Pro­tecti­ve Work­pla­ce.
