Braai Day ce­le­bra­ted at the Bo­ta­ni­cs

On Mon­day af­ter­noon, 24 Sep­tem­ber, a fun Braai Day i­ni­ti­a­ti­ve was held at the Bo­ta­ni­cs S­ports Grounds in Graaff-rei­net.

T­his e­vent - the first of its kind to be held lo­cal­ly - chal­len­ged lo­cals to bring their braai e­quip­ment to the lo­cal s­ports grounds on the pu­blic ho­li­day, w­he­re they we­re sup­p­lied with a ta­ble and wood, and tas­ked with cre­a­ting a her­i­ta­ge dish of their choi­ce to put forth to a jud­ge.

The brai­n­child of lo­cal Pie­ter Pie­naar, the i­dea be­hind the e­vent was to u­ni­te the com­mu­ni­ty in a true South A­fri­can cu­li­na­ry tra­di­ti­on, the braai. By e­ar­ly af­ter­noon, the fi­res we­re lit and it was ti­me for the par­ti­ci­pants to put their cook­ing s­kills to the test, by either braai­ing or ma­king a pot­jie­kos dish. Ac­cor­ding to Pie­naar, e­ven though at­ten­dan­ce was not qui­te as high as he would ha­ve ho­ped, the day tur­ned out to be a fun­fil­led af­ter­noon for a few lo­cal fa­mi­lies.

Pie­naar is plan­ning on hos­ting the e­vent a­gain next y­e­ar and ho­pes that it will at­tract mo­re in­te­rest in fu­tu­re.
