Car crashes into takeaway
Sue Maclennan It is still not known when the High Street Steers takeaway restaurant will reopen after a Mercedes Benz C Class drove through it and destroyed equipment on Sunday 14 August.
On Tuesday 23 August, the restaurant manager Thozama Nkawu said they were still fixing a piece of equipment that was damaged during the incident.
“There are items that have to be replaced and we can’t be sure of when will be opening again. Maybe on Friday we might open but I don’t want to promise anything. It will depend, because there were some computers that were crashed into,” said Nkawu.
Supervisor on duty on the day of the incident, Brian Ncube said the driver had apparently intended to stop outside and order a takeaway. Ncube said it seemed that instead of pressing the brake pedal, she accelerated.
“Fortunately no one was hurt,” Ncube said.
He said the driver was so shocked she was unable to reverse the car back out of Steers and someone else did it for her.
He told Grocott’s Mail that restaurant employees would continue to be paid their sala- ries even while the outlet remained closed.
Grahamstown police spokesperson Captain Luvuyo Mjekula confirmed that there was a vehicle that drove through Steers in High Street on Sunday and police were called to the incident at around 2pm.
“I can confirm the incident but no case has been opened yet. We are hoping to open a case as soon as we get enough information. We are still following on and checking the information that we have,” said Mjekula.
