GBC host Whitesides Trophy

Grahamstow­n Bowling Club hosted the Barclays Whisky Whiteside Trophy over the past weekend. The Whiteside Trophy is paired up with the Barclays Whisky Inggs Cup and the results from the two events are combined for the overall Barclays Whisky Combined Inggs Cup and Whiteside Trophy.

The Inggs Cup took place in Uitenhage from 20 to 21 August. According to Jill McDougall of the host club, the Whitesides has been held since 1945.

The Grahamstow­n Bowling Club teams were made up of Phillip and Stuart McDougall, Kenneth May and Casper Scheepers (Section A), Malcolm Grant, Craig Langson, Carl Goosen and Hilmar Eichoff (Section B).

Representi­ng the Albany Bowling Club were Clive Bartlett, Ali Daniels, Marcelle Burgess and Izak Venter (Section A), Bresby du Preez, Kallie Calitz, Andre van Reenen and Juan Pretorius (Section B).

Winning the Whitesides Trophy was Midlands, with Jeffreys Bay Bowling Club finishing second and Uitenhage Bowling Club third. Grahamstow­n Bowling Club finished eighth while Albany Bowling Club finished 13th.

In last month’s Inggs Cup, Port Elizabeth Bowling Club took first place, followed by Midlands and The Woods Bowling Club. Albany finished seventh and Grahamstow­n 10th.

For the combined Inggs Cup and Whiteside Trophy, the overall winners were Midlands with 26 points, followed by Port Elizabeth (24 points) and The Woods (22). Grahamstow­n finished seventh (14) while Albany finished 10th (12).

A total of 16 clubs were represente­d in the combined competitio­n.

Each club taking part in the Inggs and Whitesides entered one side consisting of two teams. Each team was made up of four players. All teams were randomly drawn into two sections. The first rounds play was a random draw. After the first game teams were ranked according to points and the top-ranked teams played against each other and so on downwards.

Meanwhile, three men’s Eastern Area teams are heading off to King William’s for the mini-district tournament. Representi­ng Grahamstow­n are Peter Heynes, Stan Long, Clive Bartlett and Bresby Du Preez (all members of Albany Bowling Club).
