A great place for soccer! message from the Mayor
Makana Municipality is very proud to have hosted such a successful New Year’s soccer tournament during the festive season.
This has been without doubt the most attractive soccer tournament to be hosted in Makana, in terms of prize money. The winning team walked away with a well-deserved R100 000 cash prize, a trophy and gold medals.
The runners up walked away with R50 000 and silver medals.
Third prize took home R25 000 and bronze medals, while fourth walked away with a respectable R20 000 cash prize.
The cherry on top was the fact that the tournament was won by a local team. Makana Rhini United (Maru) were crowned the inaugural winners of the tournament, much to the joy of local football lovers.
According to Statistics SA, 66% of Makana’s population falls between 0-33 years of age, therefore education and recreation are the cornerstone for sustainable development of youth in Makana.
The New Year’s Cup Soccer Tournament came at the right time for Makana. The festive season exposes a lot of young people to alcohol and drugs and the tournament was a welcome distraction for many young people who took part.
The tournament is aimed at promoting football development in the province; while also providing an alternative activity to keep youth away
from drugs and alcohol.
Nurturing upcoming youth is key and Makana Municipality is committed to continuing working with football developers to take soccer forward. The South African Football Association (Safa), The Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture, the Sarah Baartman District Municipality and Makana, in partnership with one of the best-run football leagues in the world, the well known Spanish LaLiga, came together to launch this historic initiative.
LaLiga will also help Makana develop up and coming young talent in future.
It was a great pleasure to host all players, managers, coaches and fans at the first New Year’s Cup in Grahamstown. Makana is indeed a great place to be for soccer!
It’s a particular honour for me to extend my thanks to Dr Danny Jordaan, who is always with Makana in sport; from Spain, the Director of LaLiga, Mr Tony [Antonio] Barrabas for boosting municipalities such as Makana by helping with soccer at a grassroots level; soccer Legend Doctor Khumalo; Mzuvukile Tom − former Bafana Bafana and Golden Arrows player; Patrick Mayo, former Kaizer Chiefs and Bushbucks player; and Luyanda Papu and his team for organising such a successful event.
My thanks also goes to all volunteers for their hard work.
